As you read through our news items you will see there is considerable coverage on matters relating to "A Boards" and highway obstruction. This is area where we as WAAG have been active in trying to protect the rights of wheelchair users, mums with buggies etc. One of our committee, Ann Buckle wrote to her local MP the Rt Hon John Redwood who in turn raised the matter on her behalf with the Department of Transport. Please follow the link to read the the letter from The Minister of State at the Department for Transport to the Rt Hon John Redwood MP.
Wokingham Borough Council have recently published a "code of conduct", as a result of our lobbying, but we feel it does not go far enough. The Department of Transport state that it is an offence to deposit anything on the highway which interrupts a person using the highway. The relevant sections of the Highways Act 1908 (1980 Act) are 137, 143, 148 and 149.
We will continue to work with Wokingham Borough Council in their 6 months trial period to control "A Board" activity but our objective continues to be that Wokingham Borough Council and the local police use the legislation as laid down by UK parliament.
