SUCCESS

The LINk have completed its first projects

Access to GP surgery premises

The LINk has looked into access to GP surgeries following a member of the community saying that they found it physically difficult to access their gp surgery building.  The project team visited surgeries and whilst there collected patient information leaflets.  They also looked at patient information provided on surgery websites before putting together a report of their findings and some recommendations on how changes could be made for the better.  The report has been sent to stakeholders.  If you would like to see the report please contact Michelle Wooff  Tel:   0118 9360090.

RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) Consultation

The Wokingham LINk were made aware of a national survey, commissioned by RNIB, into the experiences of  blind and partially sighted people in getting access to personal and general health information given to them by the NHS.

The Wokingham LINk consulted with a blind and partially sighted group in Wokingham and members of the group strongly agreed with the key findings and the recommendations made in the report and offered further comments which were recorded.   The LINk also gave Wokingham Area Access Group and Wokingham Ability Partnership the opportunity to ask their members if they would like to contribute any comments.

The LINk sent the comments that were collected to NHS Berkshire West asking what measures the PCT are taking or plan to take to ensure the needs of blind and partially sighted patients are met as a result of the RNIB recommendations .  The LINk await their response.

Your LINk Steering group needs your involvement

It has been an encouraging first year for the setting up and development of the LINk and the completion of our first projects.

Membership of the wider participant group is open to all individuals who are over sixteen and who live or work, paid or voluntary, in the Wokingham Borough area.

The LINk are asking it’s participants to consider representing their community on the Steering group.  The group have an important role to play and its function is to lead the work of the LINk and support and enable groups and individuals to carry out the work of the LINk through:

·           Ensuring key local stakeholders are represented and their views considered

·           Communicating with the wider community

·           Planning work and allocating resources to support that work

·           Supporting groups to undertake work, take up issues, produce reports which commissioners and providers can use to improve services

As volunteers, Steering group participants would be expected to commit up to a maximum of 10 hours per month to the role.  Some current Steering group members volunteer more time.  Out of pocket expenses will be paid.

If you would like more information about the role please contact Michelle Wooff

Tel:   0118 9360090.   The closing date for applications/nominations to the role is 5pm Monday 15th March 2010.

Exploring access to GP appointments and performance of all GP surgeries in our area.

NHS Berkshire West event ‘Health network’ –  have your say  on 23rd February, 6-8pm at Wokingham Town Hall.

‘The NHS Berkshire West Health Network is a membership open to local people and organisations who wish to receive regular information about developments to local NHS services and who may want to become more involved in helping NHS Berkshire West shape future services.   The health network hold regular meetings throughout the year where we listen to people’s views about the health service and use those views to help us make changes’.

‘The next Health Network meeting is being held at Wokingham Town Hall on the 23rd February from 6-8pm.  Refreshments will be available.  At this meeting we will be inviting people’s views on two subjects: firstly we will be exploring access to GP appointments.  We want to understand if there are any barriers people might face when trying to book or get appointments.  Secondly we are planning to publish information about the performance of all GP surgeries in our area, so that people can find out how their GP is doing in key areas of work or look at information about practices with which they might wish to register. This information will also help NHS Berkshire West by giving us an objective and rounded view of performance.  We need to know what sort of information would be useful for you to know about a surgery, and how you would like to see it presented’.

‘Please come along to the meeting to have your views listened to and let us know what you think, or if you can’t make the meeting contact us on healthnetwork@berkshire.nhs.uk or 0118 982 2962’

Patient Opinion

7th January saw the launch of ‘Patient Opinion’s’ mental health platform.

Founded by Paul Hodgkin, a GP who wanted to find a way to make the wisdom of patients available to the NHS.   Another way that you can tell your story and voice your ideas to help other patients, and to improve the NHS.

Duty to Involve

The Government Office for the South East (GOSE) has commissioned a mapping exercise to detail the culture and mechanisms of engagement of local authorities with local equality groups/champions across the South East region.

The exercise aims to provide a snapshot of how the new Duty to Involve which came into force in April 2009, and is set out in Part 7 Section 138 of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007, is working in the region.
