Wokingham Area Access Group (WAAG) awards can be awarded to any business, shop or service in the Wokingham Borough who provide good accessibility to the disabled or families with young children.
Nominations are made by the public by completing a form (available at the bottom of this page or from a Wokingham area newspaper) and submitting it to WAAG.
The nominees are visited by a member of WAAG who, using training provided by Wokingham Borough council, is able to assess the nominee on the following areas:
- Practical and accessible layout
- Available facilities (hearing loops, disabled toilets etc)
- Staff training and service
Once assessed, a grading is awarded. There are 3 grades, and each is represented by a symbol on the award certificate, as shown below.
If the nominee has good access to the premises, wide doors and a sensible spacious layout it may be awarded the wheel chair standard. Alternatively, if wheelchair access is not available, but the layout would benefit those with mobility aids like crutches or walking frames, an alternative symbol may be shown on the award.
The second symbol represents facilities for the hearing impaired. Premises awarded this symbol will have hearing loops available, or other appropriate means of communicating with the hearing impaired.
The third symbol represents facilities for the visually impaired. The site will allow trained dogs for the blind and disabled on the premises, or the staff will have been trained to provide services to the visually impaired and blind.
Certificates are presented to the succesful nominees each month, and the nominees are encouraged to display their award in the entrances to their premises, allowing customers and visitors with disabilities peace of mind and confidence that they can use the premises without complications.
